An ultra-rare Audemars Piguet reference 5072 dress watch in yellow gold, circa 1953. In the world of vintage Audemars Piguet the 5072 distinguishes itself with a scarce and sought after combination of features. An uncharacteristically large 37mm Calatrava-style case provides a modern look and feel on the wrist, while a screw down case back provides welcome protection from the elements. Inside beats a coveted 13 ligne VZSSC, a center second variant of Audemars Piguet’s venerable VZ. The present example is the nicest we’ve seen. The 18kt yellow gold case is full and thick and remains in excellent condition having only been lightly polished. Inner movement dust cover is present. The main attraction however is the factory original silver dial, which is untouched and flawless. Applied gold faceted batons mark the hours with an outer ring of black printed hash marks counting the minutes/seconds. Original yellow gold baton hour and minute hands with center sweep seconds. The dial features a small signature variant specific to the early and mid 1950’s. Dial signed “AUDEMARS, PIGUET”, “GENÈVE”, “SWISS”.
Audemars Piguet hand winding VZSSC with 19 jewels, adjusted to temperatures and four (4) positions. The movement is in excellent condition with an attractive pink age toning, is winding, running well and keeping time.
