A gents IWC Ingenieur reference 66661 AD wrist watch in stainless steel, circa 1963. IWC released the Ingenieur in 1955 to meet a growing need for high quality, purpose built tool watches appropriate for professional applications. The Ingenieur was constructed with an inner case and dust cap made of soft iron that enabled the mechanism to withstand strong magnetic fields. These watches have become increasingly sought after in recent years due to the high quality mechanical movements utilized, a larger case size and well proportioned, elegant dial designs.
The screw back steel case on this example is is full and thick, measuring 36.5mm excluding the correct signed “fish” crown. The glossy black dial is in excellent condition and features a “calatrava” style layout with tritium luminous dots and polished silver applied bars marking the hours, silver dauphine hands, center sweep seconds and white dial printing. Silver rimmed white date disk at 3 o’clock. Dial signed “International Watch Co, SCHAFFHAUSEN, INGENIEUR, T SWISS T”.
The original self winding IWC caliber 8531 contains 21 jewels. Although service history is unknown the movement is exceptionally clean, running well and keeping time.
