A rare vintage gents Audemars Piguet tonneau wrist watch in steel, circa 1972 with inner and outer box.  The reference 5369 was designed in the early 1970’s by Gerald Genta of Royal Oak and Nautilus fame.  Stainless steel cased Audemars Piguet watches qualify as rare, but a steel AP housing a caliber 2002, with total production of 200 combine two rarities into a highly unique and interesting watch.  A well preserved example of this reference, Lot 104 in Phillips’ 2016 Geneve Watch Auction: Four hammered at $11,400 with a pre-auction estimate of $8,200 – $12,400.

The tonneau shaped case (33.5mm excluding crown / 40mm lug to lug) features a satin brushed finish on the top and sides with a high polished bevel separating the two.  The innovative case features a three part design that seals the movement from the elements without the need for a screw down back.  The simple silver flake dial is factory original with black painted applied baton hour markers and is signed “AUDEMARS PIGUET”, “SWISS”.  Original black painted stick hands and center sweep seconds.  Near mint unpolished condition from case to dial.

Original Audemars Piguet caliber 2002 is clean, running well and keeping time.
