THE STORY

The origins of the brand of the rose and shield harken back to 1926, when “The Tudor” was formally registered by “Veuve de Philippe Hüther”, a Swiss watchmaking house for use by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf.  The Rolex patriarch envisioned this new offshoot as a way to offer watches with the dependability of the flagship brand at a more modest price point.  In 1936 Wilsdorf acquired sole rights to the brand and the signature rose began appearing on dials, a symbol of graceful design.

THE WATCH

A fine gents Tudor 7966 Prince Oysterdate watch from 1965 and a truly classic sports watch.  The steel case is in overall very good condition measuring 34.5mm excluding the original Rolex signed crown.  Many of these early Tudor watches were equipped with Rolex branded hardware.  There is some wear throughout the case and bracelet, but overall less than typically seen on a watch of this age.  The radially brushed silver dial is very nicely preserved with its original factory finish intact, applied dagger indices and creamy radium lume pips.  The date window at 3 o’clock is framed in silver and can be observed through the magnifier of the original plexiglass crystal.  Factory original silver alpha hour and minute hands with inset radium lume.  19mm signed Rolex riveted bracelet with #61 end links.
